During our end-of-year distance learning the Getty Museum put out a challenge to students. Recreate a piece of classic art. Several students from Indio High School followed the lead of Principal Derrick Lawson and did just that.

2020 graduate Marilyn Gutierrez Hernandez took an interesting path in her recreation of American Gothic.

Principal Lawson received an email from the museum notifying him that Marilyn’s rendition of the classic piece is being considered for inclusion in a book commemorating the challenge. Off the Walls: Inspired Re-Creations of Iconic Artworks is expected to be released in September 2020 and Derrick will be notified if Marilyn’s photo is included.

UPDATE (08/2020): The overwhelming response to the Getty challenge prompted the renowned museum to create a book titled Off the Walls: Inspired Re-Creations of Iconic Artworks. Among the works they selected to feature in the book is Marilyn’s! Sales of the book will be donated to Artist Relief, an emergency initiative offering resources to artists across the country.
