DSUSD hosted its 3rd Annual “LA Rams” Flag Football Championships on Saturday, November 16, 2024, at Colonel Mitchell Paige Middle School. With approximately 400 players representing 16 elementary schools, the event was a thrilling showcase of local talent, team spirit, and sportsmanship. Thank you for the partnership with DSUSD Expanded Learning Opportunity Program (ELO-P), Kirsten Knapp and Caleb Lopez, along with the LA Rams Youth Development Coordinator, Coach Mo Streety, and Johnathan Franklin.

The tournament marks the culmination of a highly anticipated season, which is a partnership between the LA Rams and Desert Sands Unified. All players sport LA Rams jerseys throughout the tournament, adding to the excitement and connection to the professional football team.

This year’s championship sees notable growth in the flag football program, with 16 teams from 12 different schools competing in the co-ed division. One of the most exciting developments is the expansion of the league’s girls' division. In 2024, 12 schools will have their first-ever all-girls flag football teams, following the California Interscholastic Federation’s (CIF) decision to officially sanction girls’ flag football as a CIF sport.

“We are incredibly proud to see our league grow and evolve, especially with the addition of more girls' teams,” said Mo Streety, the LA Rams Youth Development Coordinator, who attended the event. "This expansion is a huge step for these young athletes, providing them with even more opportunities to grow and excel in the sport."

Congratulations to the following teams:

CO-ED CHAMPIONSHIPS
1st:  Earhart Explorers
2nd:  Oliphant Owls
3rd:  Roosevelt Rams

GIRLS CHAMPIONSHIPS

2nd:  Dr. Carreon Academy Comets

In addition to the tournament, all coaches and players were invited to participate in a special youth flag football clinic hosted by the LA Rams on December 4 at Shadow Hills High School. The clinic featured instruction from the Rams’ expert youth development coaches. It’s an exciting opportunity for the players to sharpen their skills and for the coaches to learn from some of the best in the business.

“We are committed to providing the best possible resources to our coaches and players,” said Streety. “The clinic is a chance for everyone involved to elevate their game and take their skills to the next level.”

La Quinta High School and Shadow Hills High School girls flag football teams assisted the LA Rams Youth Development Team in teaching football skills and spreading the love of football to our DSUSD elementary flag football players. Indio Police Department also came out to join in the drills with our players.
