DSUSD Hosts 2nd Annual Adapted Physical Education Abilities Field Day
Held at Shadow Hills High School on February 21, this uplifting event
brought together middle and high school students from DSUSD’s Extensive Support Needs
Classrooms for an exciting day of adaptive sports, teamwork, and pure joy. Students participated in specially designed games promoting confidence,
movement, and camaraderie in an inclusive and supportive environment.
This incredible event was made possible through the generous support of Bighorn Cares, which
recently awarded the Desert Sands Educational Foundation with a $7,500 grant. This will help
to enhance physical education opportunities for students with special needs. Thanks to this
funding, the Adapted Physical Education Abilities Field Day has become a highlight of the year,
much like the Special Olympics. Additional support comes from Shadow Hills High School,
whose student-athletes serve as volunteers, and DSUSD’s Special Education Department,
providing essential staff, including nurses, therapists, and educators, to ensure a safe and
engaging experience for all participants.
"We are thrilled to host this event for a second year, giving our students the opportunity to shine
in an environment that celebrates their strengths," said Amy Pearson, M.S. Kinesiology/A.P.E.,
Adapted Physical Education Specialist. "It’s an inspiring day of fun, inclusion, and teamwork,
and we are grateful to everyone who makes it possible."
