Congratulations to Cali Gartland, 8th grader at Palm Desert Charter Middle School, winner of the DAR, Cahuilla Chapter, annual essay contest. DSUSD Public Information Officer, Mary Perry, was one of the readers and commented on the quality of Cali’s essay. Cali will be reading the essay at the May 20th Daughters of the American Revolution luncheon.
The prompt for the essay was based on the November 2021 100th anniversary of the dedication of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery. Student writers were asked to imagine that their brother was killed during World War I and the family has been invited to the dedication of the monument. Cali’s essay was historically accurate and filled with a pulling of the heartstrings as she described the loss of her brother. Her final lines… “My Thomas died, but he didn’t die in vain. He helped save our country like many other men before him and I will never forget that so long as I live.”
Over the weekend, Cali was notified that she won the district level and her essay is headed to the DAR California State Level! Congratulations, Cali!
