Security Agent Jose Ortega with PIO Perry

On May 16 at 7:45 am, students and parents were walking, in the crosswalk, to Jackson Elementary School. A vehicle failed to stop and was inches away from the crosswalk. Agent José Ortega called for the driver to stop but he kept on going. In order to stop the vehicle, Agent Ortega literally jumped on the hood of the car. Stunned by the action, the driver stopped. Agent Ortega actually jumped in front and on top of a vehicle in order to save lives. Agent Ortega, despite some severe bruising, turned around and resumed his job until all students were safely in the school. Only then did he allow another agent to take him to be checked out.

Principal Jose Montano noted, "Since José joined the Jackson family he has been extraordinary.  He always goes above and beyond what is expected of him and he goes about his work with students at the center of his work and actions.  I never have to ask José to do anything because when I think of it he has already done it.  We are very fortunate and honored to have José as part of our family and we hope that he will continue to support and protect this community. Not all heroes wear capes, some wear security vests and are disguised as DSUSD security agents at Jackson."

Agent Ortega was presented a Golden Sands Award for his service and received a standing ovation from the school board, cabinet, and all those in attendance at the June 6 school board meeting. The certificate was presented by Public Information Officer Mary Perry as his proud wife looks on.
