DSUSD students had an amazing morning at Shadow Hills High School, as over 600 students prepared in the previous weeks to compete among 17 elementary schools in the annual Math Field Day. The students ranged from second to fifth grade as they competed in teams and individual games across the SHHS campus. The event supports the students' learning and DSUSD’s “Portrait of a Graduate” as they learn skills of communication, empathy, collaboration, and adaptability.
Thanks to the support of ELOP, Expanded Learning Opportunities, for the first time each site received a bin with the materials to teach the students the skills needed for the Math Field Day games and events. The fourth/fifth graders participated in games that contained a competitive level while the second/third graders participated in the same games only modified. This change was made by math field day coaches, Kathy Greenough from Monroe elementary and Maria Ruelas at Hoover elementary school. This allowed the younger students to experience the same events without the competition aspect to prepare them for the future Math Field Days.
The event had an opening and closing ceremony where the students cheered on their peers and other school sites as they wore matching shirts and held up banners. DSUSD employee Kristen Hill expressed, “it was a magical moment to have this much enthusiasm for their peers and for mathematics on a Saturday morning!” The closing ceremony consisted of trophies for the winners and handshakes from DSUSD School Board member Humberto Alvarez and Assitant Superintendent of Educational Services, Dr. Marcus Wood. Among those that attended were school principles as they cheered on their students and Board member Kailee Watson.
Thank you to all those who attended and participated. A special thanks to the Shadow Hills students who volunteered their time and the students from the yearbook team who took photos of the day.
Look out for next year’s Math Field day at the beginning of March!
